The storage equation…

Power= Creation+Management+Storage. I posted an article about this back in 2005 which discussed the relational equation between these three very distinct, yet related components of the power equation.

Today’s EV market is pushing investment into the creation of better battery technologies that are more dense, easier to charge and have longer lifetimes. One example of this is last week’s announcement about research by Xerox (remember them?) into new ways of creating better lithium batteries.

Is it coincidence that the “paper experts” became the “printing experts” and are now “battery experts”? The commonality amongst all is the ability to PRINT. Just as Konarka took over Polaroid’s manufacturing facility in New Bedford, Mass, it makes perfect sense to me that process is where a lot of improvement is going to come in the battery density area and thus for Xerox to be involved too.

Solar system economics is quite straightforward when looking strictly at creation. Yet when it comes to management and storage, that’s where I see huge improvements coming soon…
