A solar blog’s perspective on the risks of nuclear…

Firstly, our hearts all surely go out to the nation of Japan, who suffered a terrible earthquake, apparently 100 times worse than the one that hit Haiti last year.

I found interesting this story about two nuclear plants that apparently may have leaked radioactive materials after the quakes due to the fact that their cooling systems malfunctioned because of the effects of the quake.

There is much debate in the world about the question of nuclear power’s “renewable” status. I’d like to offer up a view which distinguishes between “clean power” and “renewable power”. Clean power would have no possible residual effect on the environment. Renewable power would not need to meet that criterion, only the fact that it was self-reproducing.

If we apply those distinctions, would nuclear fit within each of those descriptors? Whereas its obviously renewable, I don’t know if its truly “clean”. What do you think?

UPDATE: Senator Joe Lieberman is calling for a temporarily halt to the building of more nuclear plants in America until the ramifications of what is going on in Japan are fully understood.
