Sunshine state….lost potential.

Driving around in Florida this past week, it has amazed me how much solar power potential there is here, which is completely undeveloped. My kids asked me the same question. My answer is that dislodging oil as a primary source of energy will not take weeks, months or years, it will take perhaps a century. We have become dependant on oil no less than smokers are on cigarettes. We know its bad for us, yet many of us continue to do it. (I don’t smoke yet I do drive a car, albeit a very economical one).

So the fact is that as electric cars are rolling out this past month, its just a trickle yet its a start. From a trickle will come a flow, a wave and then perhaps the abundance of solar and other renewable energy will drive those energy costs down to where we actually find new uses for energy? That’s what usually happens with such an important commodity when it reaches below a level where previous utilisation was prohibitive.

All in time is the only answer I can give my kids, yet is that really a good enough one? I am not so sure they bought it. So I turned to them and asked…”what have you done today to reduce the usage of fuel? When you asked to be driven to the mall, movie theatre, etc.. rather than take mass transit, did you do your part?” They got that we all want renewables, yet we are rarely willing to make sacrifices ourselves to reduce consumption…

Great food for thought as I soak up some solar energy from my balcony… :)

Well said…..but it is indeed complicated. Today’s announcement about GoldmanSachs and DST investing $500M in Facebook…. (as well as prior investments they’ve made in Twitter/Google/etc…)….just think how these heavy hitter investors accumulate their funds – from other investments which they’ve made over time in all kinds of industries including energy (and I don’t mean the renewable kind). Indeed, the Russian investor in this deal – DST – is specifically involved in the coal and steel industries; so if a company like Google (“do no evil”) who claims to be a good eco-citizen derives a portion of its working capital from companies like DST, etc, who invest in it and who in turn make their monies from investing in dirty industries what are we to say….It’s late for me and this is not entirely coherent and cogent. But the gist is, is that our dirty industries have become the hand maiden – by default – of our clean energy and renewables industries.
